Kennesaw State 800-meter All-American Sarah Hendrick, the Atlantic Sun Conference Indoor champion in the 400 meters and the mile, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her competing at the NCAA Division 1 Indoor Championships on March 11-12 at the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala. Hendrick, who placed fifth at the Division 1 outdoor final in June and earned eighth place at last year's indoor championship meet, joins Virginia Tech's Lindsey Butler, Arkansas' Shafiqua Maloney and Brigham Young's Claire Seymour in qualifying for this season's 800 field after advancing to both indoor and outdoor finals last year. She revisits the learning experiences from her debut at the Division 1 indoor championship meet last season, and how there is an increased sense of belonging following her fifth-place finish at the outdoor final. Hendrick, 21, also analyzes how challenging it is to qualify again for the NCAA Indoor meet, with multiple defending champions and All-Americans not returning from last year's event at Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark. She reflects on the challenges of racing in the 400 final at the conference championship meet 40 minutes after capturing the mile title, and how well that has prepared her, physically and mentally, along with her 600 and 3,000 double in January at Clemson, for competing at the Division 1 Indoor Championships. Hendrick examines her collaboration with Kennesaw State cross country and distance coach Adam Bray, and how his belief in her potential has helped her run 2:01.47 outdoor and 2:02.87 indoors in the 800. She also speaks about her decision to return to Kennesaw State to complete her athletic eligibility in 2022-23, including competing in another cross country season, as well as completing her nursing degree and focusing on a Master's program as well. Hendrick explains the importance of being a mentor to younger teammates, including Division 1 indoor long jump qualifier Jasmine Akins, and how a student-athlete can develop into an All-American, or a conference or national champion at any program in the collegiate system if they have the right belief, a good work ethic and a strong support group of coaches and teammates around them.
